The limestone karsts that rise steeply out of the emerald-green water of Phang Nga Bay are its most notable feature. Far more satisfying than the typical bus-boat tour is a relaxed day excursion that takes you around the picturesque limestone islands of Phang Nga Bay, occasionally pausing to appreciate the peaceful beaches.
James Bond Island, also known as Koh Ta-pu, or “Nail Island” in Thai, originally gained international recognition as a result of its prominent appearance in the 1974 James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun. And this is where the majority of excursions appear to take every visitor simultaneously.
Calcium carbonate, or limestone, is often white. Thick layers of silt are created over millions of years by the skeletons of marine life that are constantly raining down and the chemical precipitation of additional calcium carbonate. These strata, which are hundreds of metres thick, eventually transform to stone due to the heat and pressure of their own weight.
The 40 steep-sided islands that give the narrow harbour of Phang Nga its famous unique appearance were then pushed upward by a variety of geological pressures that cracked the limestone deposits. The multicoloured streaks that define the cliffs of Phang Nga Bay are painted by mineral oxides from different sources.
