The entire bay is one large reef, and the underwater scenery is characterized by exotic species and vibrant coral in remarkably clear water.

Maya Bay gained popularity on Phi Phi since it was used for filming The Beach (1999). Before the movie, it was always very popular, but ever since it came out, Maya Bay has become well-known to people all over the world who had never heard of Phi Phi.
