Take a snorkelling excursion to learn more about the Surin Islands. Discover the Moken Village’s own way of life while snorkelling among healthy coral reefs brimming with colourful marine life.
Located in the Andaman Sea near the border of Myanmar, the Mu Ko Surin National Park is widely considered the most pristine archipelago in Thailand. Unlike the more developed Similan Islands, Surin offers a raw, “untouched” feel.
Highlights
1. World-Class Snorkeling (Nemo Gulf & Mae Yai Bay)
The Surin Islands are arguably the best snorkeling destination in Thailand. Because the reefs are shallow and the water is incredibly clear, you don’t need to scuba dive to see vibrant ecosystems. Nemo Gulf is famous for its clownfish colonies, while Mae Yai Bay offers massive coral gardens teeming with parrotfish and sea turtles.
2. The Moken “Sea Gypsy” Village
On Koh Surin Tai, you can visit a traditional village of the Moken people, an indigenous ethnic group known for their semi-nomadic seafaring lifestyle. This is a rare opportunity to see their hand-carved Kabang boats, learn about their deep spiritual connection to the ocean, and support the community by purchasing handmade wooden crafts.
3. Richelieu Rock
Located just southeast of the main islands, Richelieu Rock is a world-renowned scuba diving site. This isolated limestone pinnacle is a magnet for “big” marine life. It is one of the best places in the world to spot Whale Sharks and Manta Rays, alongside dense blankets of purple soft corals.
4. Mai Ngam Beach & Nature Trail
Mai Ngam Beach on North Surin Island is the epitome of a postcard paradise—powdery white sand and turquoise water. To get there, most visitors walk the 2km nature trail through the lush jungle, where you can spot exotic wildlife like monitor lizards, flying foxes, and the rare Nicobar pigeon.
5. Pristine Camping Under the Stars
Unlike other Thai islands filled with luxury resorts, Surin maintains its “wild” charm by offering only national park-managed tents and basic bungalows. Staying overnight allows you to experience the islands in total peace after the day-trip speedboats leave at 3:00 PM.
6. Sea Turtle Conservation
Mu Ko Surin is one of the few places in Thailand where sea turtles still come to lay their eggs. It’s very common to encounter Green turtles and Hawksbill turtles while snorkeling, as the park’s protected status has made it a safe haven for these endangered species.
